Indonesia waste culture
Even though a number of NGOs, individuals and private and public organisations are already working to reduce plastic pollution across Indonesia, there so many works left on it. Indonesia government has not made a strict policy in waste management law. This makes the people of Indonesia are not afraid to dispose of any garbage at any place. As a result, Indonesia becomes a country that has a large contribution of waste pollution to the marine-life. The number fluctuates, but more likely increasing every year.
We have no strict rule, it’s okay to throw the trash anywhere.
People said its government task to clean the amenities and public place. In other hand, they throw rubbish at anywhere. So what is the problem?
Have you ever met these people?
The current condition is people have not aware that the effect of throwing away rubbish directly. So, it still far away to think about recycling nowadays.
Who concerns about recycling
I had seen that people who live outside will more concern on this issue. Take an example in Ubud. I have found many people aware of the cleanliness.
People from the upper-middle class sometimes they are aware of cleanliness, but mostly who works in an NGO. Looking at the environmental event, more likely dominated by the young people.
Waste education has not yet become a priority in Indonesia which makes people not only from the low-income, but also the high-income aware of this issue. So, how might we create a better awareness of it?
What kind of Recycle product
These are the example of recycling product sold in Indonesia and also exported to other countries. The small-scale production (which is become upcycle product) is limited to the sachet waste, while the bottle waste used for the mass production, turns into the plastic pellet/flax. The end-product production mostly done in China.
The small-scale production for me does not really solve the problem, but it creates the awareness of the user regarding waste in the society. Meanwhile, the mass production helps decrease a large number of the waste.
What is the problem in this business?
The dirty waste.
It is wasting money and time because the trash is not separated properly. In addition, there are a lot of steps of the waste management across Indonesia, minimum 3 steps (initial collection, middle collection, and final collection). Then there will be a special treatment for making the waste cleaner and also separation based on the type. Is it too long?
